East Coast Tour: The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial
L.A. Theatre Works’ production of The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial, written by Peter Goodchild and directed by Brendon Fox, is based entirely on original transcripts of the famous 1925 Tennessee v. John Scopes “Monkey Trial”, which challenged the newly passed Tennessee legislature’s “Butler Act” banning the teaching of evolution in the State’s public schools. This East Coast Tour, prompted by last year’s successful 23-city national tour, uses the format of live in-performance radio theatre, recreated by a renowned cast of actors, to transport audiences back to Dayton, Tennessee’s sweltering, tension-filled courtroom during the summer of 1925 where they will experience first-hand the dramatic trial as it took place.

Scopes Trial Tour
This year marks the 80th Anniversary of the historical Scopes monkey trial over the right to teach the theory of evolution in public schools. This trial highlighted the principle of intellectual freedom as codified in the Bill of Rights. Amazingly, over 80 years later, the subject matter of The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial remains profoundly relevant today as demonstrated by the ongoing debates by school boards around the country about the teaching of evolution.
